TO OUR STRONG BLACK MOTHERS

I have heard it said many times that children of black mothers are lacking in respectful social skills. Most black woman are single mothers with much weight on their shoulders for the upbringing of their little children, singularly responsible financially and have little help from their own parents. I, myself have witnessed some black mothers just allow their children to stare, be rude and allow them to run wild throughout our local stores.

Having said that I want to not only make not but give my utmost respect to one black mother who caught my eye while grabbing a bite in a local Wegman's grocery store in the restaurant area. She did not catch my eye or ear at first because as i sat eating two unruly children began yelling, screaming and just being out of control. The shock came when it was not a black single mother allowing her children to run wild and out of control. It was a two parent (mother and father) family that just did not feel it necessary to disciple, teach respect or remove them from the table and explain about manners. To top it all off the family was white, yes I said "white."

After being tortured for over thirty minutes with screaming, bodily tantrums and snotty behavior, i glanced to the other side of the restaurant area. Sitting in a booth was a beautiful black single woman with two children. There was not a peep out of line from either child even when the mother had to step away from the table for a second to get a couple napkins the children sat talking together quietly and respectfully. These children were well trained in manners and showed it throughout the time they spent eating their dinner and conversing with mom. There was not a moment that went by that mom had to raise her voice for disciple. These two children knew how to act in public and mom should be not only proud of how her parenting skills but of both her children.

So I sat in awe of the stereotype she was squashing like a bug before my very eyes. So let it be known that she set the bar for single black mothers everywhere. I believe that there are many others all over the country and throughout the world who will be the strength that these children need so that they will also not become another statistic. I salute this woman and the rest of the mothers throughout the world who will be raising our future black children.
