PHISH
FARMHOUSE
MAY 16, 2000
The tenth studio album brings several more 3-6 minute tracks, making it clear that they have reduced long jams down to more CD-friendly songs. This does not diminish the value of the record, as the songs come together like pieces of a puzzle that will transfer smoothly in a live performance setting. They have, however, put together a more mellow ebb and flow collection that starts with the title track, "Farmhouse". The production is simple and is completely effective for the approach of this Phish album. It does not seem that they are in shallow waters as far as new songs ideas, since they just play and let the music pour out. There is no question that this band has paid its dues and they could sit on its laurels for quite some time. They chose instead to do what they do best: create music through strong jam sessions.
"Heavy Things" is a very cultured, more poppy song that bares (no pun intended) a close resemblance to the Barenaked Ladies. It is obvious that Phish has their ear to the ground and have the ability to absorb everything musical then jam it out and put a unique spin on it. Growth is an important factor for the band members and it never ceases to amaze me every time they have a new release how far they can stretch. Still, they never leave the jam feel out of the equation and in doing so do not leave their original fans in the dust.
"Gotta Jibboo" can only be from a direct result of conscientiously hearing Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention and letting a jam reflect all that filled their ears. It ferments all the elements that went into a Mothers song from the music writing down to the lyrics that are a bit different for Phish. Anastasio’s singing style is in sync with the piano and he is able to hit some incredible smooth high notes.
"First Tube" has an upbeat tempo that segregates itself from the rest of the disc. The previous 8 releases have always had the harder edge, catchy tune starting off the CD but they have chosen to hold off and end the disc on a high note. This is another Phish album that cannot and will not disappoint.
