PERFECT COUPLES
DECEMBER 20, 2010-APRIL 7, 2011
NBC has been off its game ever since the Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien fiasco. Perfect couples is another blip in the networks road. It does not help their stability when they chose to run 3 hours of comedy in one night. Obviously the drugs are flowing and the party is still in full bloom because no one is thinking clearly at NBC.
The plot is a romantic comedy about three couples at different junctures of their lives. Each couple comes to the table with a specific style relationship. Amy and Vance are sexually active but fight regularly, Julia and Dave are considered the normal couple then there is Leigh and Rex who represent the shows title as the "Perfect Couple." There seems to be no cohesive glue that binds the audience to the couples. No sparks to draw us back for another episode.
Television has left its roots starting with reality shows and ending with sitcoms with no live audience. There is a powerful vibe that actors feel when performing in from of a live audience and that reverberates through the television and bonds the viewer to the characters. The downfall of this show, however, is reflective in the writing not in the acting.
I, unlike the networks, always watch every week to see growth and expansion. The plot of the story is a good one so i will give an update after next weeks episode to see if the writers can pull out all the stops and make this work.
