PETER BJORN AND JOHN
WRITERS BLOCK
AUGUST 14, 2006
As the short first track "Writer's Block" comes to an end it quickly blows into "Objects of my Affection".
It is clear that this band has a distinct focus. The blend can be felt like the listener is sitting in the passenger seat while being driven on a course of musical experience. The second half of the cd is clearly experimental, as sounds from the early 80's fill the context of songs like "The Chills."
Moments of early Pink Floyd run through the background vocals with incredible dominance. Subtle orchestral sounds open "Roll the Credits" and impact the build but slowly drift away as the guitar becomes the main-stay event as the song fades. They are labeled as an indie rock, indie pop style band which often establishes the bands wanting acceptance without the need to sign with a major label. But with such a great upgrade release how long will they be able to hold of the mainstream record labels.
Each track darkens for the light of the next Patti Smith, the New York Dolls and rest of New York's underground will fill your thoughts. Peter Bjorn and John have the ability to quietly creep into our conscious while allowing their listeners to grab a piece of what it was like in the early seventies before disco took hold.
