NICKELBACK
CURB
MAY 1, 1996
Often in the Canadian music scene, no matter if it comes from the west coast, Vancouver or east coast, the singers' vocals are buried in treble with high falsetto sounds. NICKELBACK cold not be anything but the opposite, and along with strong heavy guitar this band is putting themselves on the map.
This underground powerhouse will get noticed quickly and those who recognize great song writing will believe from the first note. Only a few songs need some advanced production work, and with that said these kids have a big future. Some tracks appear on Hersher, an extended play album, but for this review we are combining both.
Brandon Kroeger (drums), Mike Kroger (bass), Ryan Peake (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) and Chad Kroeger (vocals, lead guitar) make up the uniquely power chord heavy band with an abundance of lyrical talent. Their sound relies on the strength of "in your face", grabbing the attention of the listener. The lyrics are easy to catch on to and the sound is so incredibly NICKELBACK while allowing each song to have its own identity.
This band has so much potential wrapped up in these four guys that the world will take notice. Young bands with this much writing talent should not be swayed by what the "Men in Suits" tell them to change about their sound or look. This would be the bands demise as their writing is superior to most underground bands at this time.
Whichever release, Hersher or Curb, that you choose to introduce yourself to the band with, there will not be an ounce of disappointment. Do yourself a favor though and get both, plug them in, and I feel confident that satisfaction can almost be guaranteed.
