NICKELBACK
ALL THE RIGHT REASONS
OCTOBER 4, 2005
Hitting hard with a bit of Alex Van Halen style drumming sets the pace for what could be the band's collection of most top 40 hits. All the right Reasons has the potential to have every song released as a single and stay on the charts for weeks, even months before the next song gets its time.
They could release a new song each month in no particular order and the listeners would pop them like penny candy. The first single, "Photograph", again is Kroeger doing what he does best; writing in reflection, and if the beat was fast or slow it would not matter. This track happens to have a bit of a slower tempo with sullen guitars fitting the mood of the lyrics. At 31 years of age Kroeger is looking back and opening his lyrics with reverie as his state of mind.
Do not let the mood take hold as you listen, because NICKELBACK is known to take your ear buds on a roller coaster ride of emotion. The moment you think you have dialed in to what the band is giving, they change gears. Like a wide receiver on a football field running with the ball, end zone in sight, and boom, he is taken to the ground. NICKELBACK has established this regiment on every release and continue it on All the right Reasons.
They know how to grab the passion in the music, compound it with amazing lyrics, and another hit emerges. There does not seem to be an end to their internal hit-making abilities. The 11 tracks could each alone stand on their own merits as Kroeger is a natural storyteller with the band supplying the soundtrack. He does not write crazy subliminal messages in his songs - the direct approach is his greatest gift. The grunge days of short lines with mysterious possibilities surrounded by bread crumbs to follow are not in this band's portfolio. The edginess of the music directs the flow in a different direction, but the words are in the structure of Springsteen. Storytellers have the ability to tell a complete story allowing the listener to be swept deep into the lyrics as if it was their own declaration. How much is left in the tank? Can this band continue building? The horizon is infinite.
