JESSIE J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish in Redbridge, London. She was the youngest of three, her mother was a nursery school teacher and her father was a social worker. She has said that her family is very creative, but are more academically inclined. She was the only one who “put my life to a melody”.
When she was 17, Jessie J joined a girl group called Soul Deep. This was the age when she wrote her first song, “Big White Room”, which portrays her experience of being hospitalized at 11 years old. She had been sharing a hospital room with a younger boy who lost his life.
She was initially signed to Gut Records, which went bankrupt before they released any of her material. At this point, she became a successful songwriter with a Sony ATV publishing contract. She has written lyrics for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, penning the hit song “Party in the U.S.A.”
In addition, she went on the "Bring Ya To The Brink" tour with Cyndi Lauper and was invited to join her on stage to perform “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. She eventually signed with Lava Records (and jointly with Universal Republic) after the president was sent a link to her Myspace page.
Jessie J began the recording of her debut album, Who You Are, in 2006, which was finally completed on January 19,2011. Originally, the album was set to be released in March 2011, but the release date was pushed to February due to high demand from her audience. The album and its singles have charted in many countries and have won a handful of awards. It was recently announced that Jessie J will be a coach and mentor on the television show, The Voice UK.
