CAGE THE ELEPHANT was formed in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2006. The members of the band are: Matthew Shultz (Lead vocals); Lincoln Parish (Lead Guitar); Brad Shultz (Rhythm Guitar); Daniel Tichenor (Bass, Backing vocals); and Jared Champion (Drums/Percussion). Previously, they had been in a band called Perfect Confusion.

After signing with Relentless Records in 2007, the band moved to London, England. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2008 in Europe via Relentless Records, and was released in the United States almost a year later on Red Ink Records.

While in England, Cage The Elephant announced that they were going to release their next album in 2010 called Computer Says Move. They had put together about 80 song ideas which they ditched when they came back to the U.S. two years later. According to their official website, the band then went through a “period of intense musical growth”. They gained inspiration by listening to the Pixies, Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers and general 1950’s surf rock. They shut themselves away in cabins in remote Kentucky for two weeks, emerging with the material for what would be their next release, Thank You, Happy Birthday.

The album was released in January of 2011 on the Jive label, and the band employed producer Jay Joyce, who also produced their first album. The band says that with their second release they wanted to create a sound that was distinctly their own, rather than being able to clearly identify their influences like on their debut.

Cage the Elephant is currently on tour, and is about to release their first live DVD, Live From The Vic In Chicago, on December 13, 2011. They are currently in the writing stages for their third album, (and actually have been since before the release of their second album) and are planning on being in the studio to begin recording soon.
