WHEN COMES THE SPRING
JANETTE OKE1985
Elizabeth Thatcher marries her Canadian Mounted Policeman Wynn Delaney. Together, they travel to the deep northern Canadian frontier. The outpost that they are sent to is made up of a trading post and cabins. Wynn is the law, the doctor, and the mediator. Elizabeth combats loneliness and the elements while Wynn travels.
Several Indian women befriend Elizabeth even though there is a language and cultural barrier. A woman recluse and a woman trapper are challenges. Elizabeth tries to teach them all as well as the children, since there is no school available while the fight for survival provides lessons for Elizabeth to learn. Life threatening elements are a daily occurrence, making the teacher become the pupil. Elizabeth imparts her faith and strength to help alongside Wynn.
Janette Oke takes her readers on the journey to the Outpost. Her character development and descriptive scene paintings make the reader feel alive and an integral part of the story.
I recommend this book to readers of all ages. I hope to read the next novel, “When Breaks the Dawn”. It will be like visiting old friends and a familiar place.
