THE WAVE

SUSAN CASEY

MAY 31, 2011

Having seen the interview with Susan Casey on the late late show with Craig Ferguson it was inevitable that i would crash into her book called "The Wave."  the introduction begins with the story of the RRS discovery's voyage that would shake the foundation of ocean science.  On board was one of two scientists, Penny Holiday, who would gather the most incredible data and give credence to centuries of tall tales.  Casey dives into the lives of surfers bringing the reader as close to being on the board as a writer can.  This book is primarily about surfers but she never lets you just cruise along her research gives you complete knowledge about waves and how the world handles the repercussions they cause.

While in the process of collecting her research data and meeting with people who have a direct connection to the large freighter disasters were happening around the world.  Bulk carriers were often in need of rescue daily, weekly and monthly at any moment a distress signal would active a series of events.  This action does not end after the recovery because the salvage company who wins the job almost always must prove there was no other solution.  To get paid they must document in writing every action combine with the necessity of that action.  In other words, was there any way the rescue could have been averted.  Help us save the lives and the product aboard the ship immediately but buyer beware we may not be so willing to pay.

Most non-fiction writers base their careers on research through the internet, books, magazines and legal documents.  Susan Casey lives through the words she puts within the bindings of this book.  In doing so, she was able to vividly bring her experiences to life and allow the readers imagination to be transported from the pages to the exact destination in 3D which titillates the senses.  You will feel the pulsating water she rides, visualize the surfers riding through the mouth of a humongous wave and with hands clamped to the edges of the book you will feel like you are gripping the sides of the boat.

This is an exceptional read for anyone who loves the water in any capacity.  If your a swimmer, fisherman, captain or crew member ride these pages and know that with every adventure on the high seas that you've endured there will be a feeling of vindication for these unbelievable stories others have rolled their eyes at.

A learning curve manual for new surfers and seamen who love the adventure but need to know that skills are not acquired after your first journey in the water.  The accomplishments that water adventurers who appear in this book have had years of experience and have survived because they knew when to say when.  "Calling it a day" is not easy and often can be ridiculed but those who understand their limits will live to ride the waters another day.

Next on tap "the devil's teeth: a true story of obsession and survival among America's great white sharks" and with Susan Casey behind the wheel i am sure i will live another adventure within the pages.ry of obsession and survival among America's great white sharks" and with Susan Casey behind the wheel i am sure i will live another adventure within the pages.
